EXISTENCE THROUGH DISTANCE

AN IMMERSIVE GALLERY EXHIBITION

CHEALSEA TAYLOR

ABOUT WORK

In the virtual gallery you will encounter a monumental crystilized photograph called I’m not feeling strong right now.

Before moving from Texas to Colorado for graduate school I had a lot of anxiety that something bad was going to happen to my family while I was away and I would not be able to make it back to them in time. Right now that fear is stronger than ever, especially since they are all immune-compromised in some way or another.

I am thankful that my family is still doing well, but because the pandemic is still ongoing at this time I am still afraid. I feel so deeply for those who have been affected by it. The majority of COVID-19 deaths in our county have been in nursing homes. People are continuing to die without the company of their loved ones.

This breaks my heart and I know I’m not the only one experiencing these feelings. This work is about the fear and anxiety I know many of us are dealing with at this time. By using a flame to melt the emulsion on my family photographs, symbolizing how their immune systems have been affected by smoking and over-consumption, I am creating a more tactile surface for the alum crystals to grow and spread, similar to the way in which the virus resides in the respiratory system and grows within the body.

Medium: Inkjet Print, Flame, Alum Salt, Gouache Paint, Water
